A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
