A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
